Curated by Katie VanVliet & Jennifer Manzella and published by BYO Print, Solastalgia: Redefining Home in Precarious Times was presented at Our Shared Future, the 2022 Southern Graphics Council International Conference in Madison, WI. Artists submitted proposals to be included in the portfolio based on the title theme, and 24 total portfolios were produced; each contributing artists receiving a portfolio in exchange for their contribution. The remaining portfolios are in the permanent collections of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, SGCI Archives at the Zuckerman Museum of Art, Kennesaw, GA, and the Bowes Art & Architecture Library, Stanford University, CA.
Solastalgia is a relatively new term coined by Australian environmental researcher and philosopher Glenn Albrecht. It refers to the stress on individuals caused by environmental changes while they are connected to their home environment. Artists were challenged to create an image that reflects their vision of the concept through their personal relationships to the place they call “home” and how current environmental changes, political systems, and power relationships influence their emotional being. Artists submitted work from ten states across the United States as well as Canada, Portugal, and New Zealand.
